The daily rate of watch is highly related to the balance wheel and amplitude. I've seen some people recorded the daily rate everyday according to observing and experimentalizing their own watch. Actually, the daily rate of ±10Sces is quite accurate, but there are many guys having high requirement on the accuracy of the watch and think this daily rate is still too many.
The first thing that i wnat to say is the accuracy cannot be achieved or maintained by adjustment. Why do i say that? Because the accuracy of the mechanical watch is constantly changing. The spring can be loose and tight, so in one fixed position, at one steady temperature, the watch can be temporarily accurate, but once the condition is changed, the accuracy will change immediately. That means that even though you adjust your watch with no daily rate at all, you'll find that it can't maintain the accuracy, because the accuracy is changing instantaneously and astatically. And there are many other issues will influence the accuracy of the watch. What we saw normally was just the average daily rate of the unit time.
Timekeeping performance is most accurate on the condition of the full winding. If you want your watch accurate, then full winding it as possible as you can. And this is more important for the automatic mechanical watch. The extent of the spring tight is related to the time you wearing your watch and the amount of exercise when you are wearing your watch, on condition that you need to ensure you have enough amount of exercise.
The watch has different accuracy on different position. That's what we called position differences. High-class watches would have been adjusted to 5 positions and 3 temperature before it is delivered from the original factory. The 5 positions are: dial up, dial down, crown down(3 o'clock position down), crown left(12 o'clock position down), crown up(9 o'clock position down) and crown right(6 o'clock position down). According to the statistics, the use condition of different position of most people is: 35% of dial up, 30% of crown left, 25% of crown down and 10% of other positions. So, make use of the different accuracy discrepancy to adjust the watch.
Take a test of your watch and record it. The method is very easy. Full winding your watch first, then synchronize your watch with a startand time and record the time discrepancy of your watch compared to the stardstand time after 24hs with dial up first. Repeat the process but on different positions and record the results. For instance, the static test results is: +20Secs/D of dial up, +20Secs/D of dial down, -5Secs/D of crown down, +25Secs/D of crown left, +10Secs/D of crown up, then the actual time discrepancy when you 're wearing it is +15Secs/D.
Pay attention to the position that your watch should choose at night. Take the example above, it's obvious that you should put your watch crown down at night to decrease the accumulated daily rate. Only you know the causes and characteristics of your watch timing discrepancy, your watch can serve you better.
