Yesterday H. Moser & Cie. presented two new models in the Bucherer Blue Editions collection, available exclusively at Bucherer, the Swiss-based retailer with locations throughout Europe. These are the second and third watches that Moser has released as part of its partnership with Bucherer. To date, Bucherer has collaborated with a number of watchmakers on this line, and even partnered on a Blue Editions motorcycle with Harley Davidson.

What's immediately notable about both of these editions is that they don't seem to follow the script set forth for Bucherer Blue Editions, namely, the incorporation of blue colors and accents in their design. At least, at first they don't appear to. If you turn the watches over, you'll see that the balance wheels, balance bridges, and rotors of both the men's and the ladies' piece have been blued in-house by Bucherer. The linings of the straps also have a blue color to them. Moser is notable among smaller independent brands – they make just 1,500 watches per year – for making their own escapements in-house through their sister company Precision Engineering AG. Actually, they produce about 50,000 balance springs annually (with a capacity to ramp up to 200,000) and are a significant, if silent, supplier to high-end watch brands in Switzerland. The only client that they are allowed to talk about publicly is MB&F.

Starting with the Heritage Bucherer Blue Editions watch, we have a historically influenced steel wristwatch that is the first instance of H. Moser combining its beautiful, trademark fumé dials with the use of Arabic numerals to indicate the hours. Moser said that this watch is reminiscent of certain of its watches from the 1900s, and indeed the company had a historical pocket watch on hand from the Moser museum (where these watches were formally launched) to demonstrate the design lineage of this piece. While that pocket watch was not a pilot's watch,  the design that we see here struck our eye as a vintage-inspired pilot's piece.

On the ladies' side, we have the Endeavour Diamonds Bucherer Blue Editions, also in steel, that debuts a new 38mm case size for Moser. The bezel is fitted with diamonds, and its dial is also of the fumé variety, though in this case it has applied stick markers for the hours. On the reverse, you'll see that this watch has the same HMC 200 movement as the larger men's piece, and the movement fits this smaller case size wonderfully.

Initial Thoughts
The Bucherer Blue Editions have been a big hit thus far, and have done much to evince the Lucerne-based retailer's influence within the high-end watch industry. At the launch of these latest watches, Bucherer chief commercial officer, Patrick Graf, said that Bucherer would seek to expand this collection into additional product areas in the future, citing work they had already done with Harley Davidson, while always keeping watches at the core of the business.

There is much to like here in both of these models, even if the 42mm men's piece is a honestly bit large for my taste, and is obviously going to draw comparisons to a similar-looking pilot that has already landed on the market at another high-end brand. But what I think is most interesting about this launch is the introduction of a new 38mm case size. Sure, the watch that sees that case size debut has diamonds and is being targeted toward women, but if they were to sub in a plain steel bezel, H. Moser would probably open the brand up to a new subset of male collectors.
