Introducing The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique Titanium

Recommended Posts

Among dive watches, few are as known a quantity as the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. One of, if not the original, dive watches to hit the market back in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms's core design has seen nearly endless iterations into a line of watches that spans a variety of sizes, colors, and complications (there are more than 80 versions in the current range). While titanium has been available on other models within the Fifty Fathoms family, including the Fifty Fathoms GMT and even the blue dial version of the watch featured here, this is the first time that the standard black dial Fifty Fathoms Automatique has been offered with a titanium case.

Initial Thoughts
While welcome in titanium, this Fifty Fathoms' size is unchanged from the standard steel model, at 45mm wide and 15.4mm thick. This is a design I have always liked, and the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is great in titanium, so why not add the core model to the lineup? While I don't care much for the date placement on these modern Fifty Fathoms models, I do love most aspects of the dial design, the hands, and that distinctive and rather lovely lumed sapphire insert on the bezel.

While the 45mm sizing is definitely too large for my wrist, those who love a larger watch may find that the lightweight and easy-wearing nature of titanium makes a lot of sense. (It has been applied to even larger versions of the Fifty Fathoms.) Titanium is always a good choice for a sporty watch and even more so for a diver, so this seems a sensible evolution of the Fifty Fathoms line. Pricing and availability are yet to be announced, so if you're interested I'd recommend contacting your local authorized dealer.
