I've posted a piece of writing of how to know that your watch is magnetized and the influence of the H-field on the watch yesterday and today i'm gonna to talk about the demagnetization methods of the watch and the demagnetization instrument. Hope you guys can learn something to protect your watch from magnetism.
When your watch has been touched with some kind of things, such as electric appliance with high magnetic field intensity or the magnet, your watch will be magnetized in different levels. Because there are many steel components inside of the watch, such as the spring, the escapement wheel, the regulator pins, the screws and the stems of the gear. They will cause the discrepancy of the timing performance, even worse the watch will stop working when they got be magnetized.
Usually, there are two methods to improve the diamagnetic performance of the watch:
1) take the non-magnetic material or the material with small remanence after been magnetized as the raw material of the components, such as stainless steel or the silicious material
2) take the method of magnetic shielding. Use the soft iron with higher permeability as the raw material of the movement cover or the gasket of the movement. A type of Ball watch is adopting this way to improve the diamagnetic performance. The antimagnetic stardand can be raised to 12000A/M or even higher from 4800A/M.
The strong magnetic fields that can be touched with most easily in our daily life is not the household electrical appliances but the kind of magnetic buckles with high Iron boron aluminium material on bags, which is made from iron boron aluminium material.
Theoretically speaking, if you want to degauss you watch, you need to put the watch in a strong alternating magnetic field and make the intensity of magnetism decreased gradually. Usually, we put the magnetized watch in the center of a large hollow coil which has been applied with the alternating current, then take out the watch slowly which means that the intensity of magnetism is decreased gradually and repeat this step with 90 degrees change of the watch orientation every times. Because the demagnetization effect is best when the demagnetization magnetic field lines is in the same direction of the magnetic field lines of the magnetized watch, and when they are in the angle of 90 degree, the demagnetization effect is invalid. So we should degauss the watch in different orientations to clean the magnetism out of the watch.
The professional demagnetization device consists of a C type silicon steel core and two sets of coil, use a large capacitance to discharge and form a damped oscillation alternating magnetic field. Put your watch in the groove of the demagnetization device, push the button and in the instantaneous flash of the neon light, the demagnetization has been completed. Of course, the watch needs to be degaussed repeatedly in different orientations.
If you want to degauss you watch on your own but you haven't the professional demagnetization device, then you can try this simple way. Find a kind of thing like transformer(the power should be enough), close your watch to the iron core of the transformer and put away from it gradually, and change the orientation of the watch to do this step repeatedly. But this easy way cannot guarantee the watch has been totally degaussed. The demagnetization of the watch is a necessary procedure of the maintenance. So, in the last, i suggest that you should fully degauss your watch first and then adjust the accuracy of the watch.
